Today 2/17/2012 at 4:05 pm I lost my beloved puppy to parvo. She was only five months old. I should have done better especially when I know how deadly parvo can be. I should have gotten her the shot when I had the chance to. She wouldn’t have suffered so much as She and I both tried to fight it for the past 24 hours. Despite it all she just couldn’t beat it. It took her life while I helplessly watched her go.
I haven’t had time to update in a while. Work has kept me busy plus the addition of six new pups on top of the eight dogs I have. I just can’t turn away strays that captures my heart. Anyway, the four pups from Poncha, my Chihuahua that had a horrible life until she was brought into my home, are about seven weeks and very mischievous. They are always finding ways to get into things. Two of Mocha’s pups; one is the pup in the photo, are more laid back and less troublesome. They all have the same dad and I found that even before they were one month old they wanted to eat dog food. So I would let them have small amounts mixed with milk replacer.
It was a bad idea. They had diarrhea and it was a pain to clean up. I was feeding them Kibbles N bits canned food at the time. Now I have them on Iams and Pedigree which doesn’t seem to give them the runs. Unfortunately kibbles N bits still does.
They have also been testing out their barks and growls which is fine most times, just really annoying when they want to test it out while I’m asleep lol. Their nails have been clipped and i have been trying to teach them basic commands like sit and wait. So far no success but Smoky, one of Mocha’s pups is starting to figure it out. Bath time is a bit of a challenge now since they have now been moved from sink to the tub. Louder noises equals scared pups.
Work has kept me real busy,so I haven’t been taking care of the pups the way I did with the kittens. Since both of my dogs are capable of producing milk and caring for their pups I am not really needed. When I checked on them last their eyes were open but it was still a milky color. Now they are able to see and have been wobble walking all over their kennel. I can’t wait for Mocha’s pups to open their eyes as well. A tottal of six pups waiting to find new loving homes.
Around Nine PM I discovered that one of my pregnant dogs had given birth to her first pup. She didn’t make any noise and I did not notice any behavioral changes. She showed no signs at all. It took and hour and a half for her to give birth to four little pups. I hope to get them checked by a vet when I get paid on Friday.
After losing the kittens that I had grown so attached to, these pups are a welcomed joy in our lives. Though they can’t replace the kittens, but new life gives reason for being happy. Now all that’s is left is to wait for my other pregnant dog to give birth and have all my dogs spayed and neutered.
Yeah I’m a little late on getting it done, but I didn’t have a job before I couldn’t afford to do everything a responsible owner should have done. I did what I could to keep them happy and well fed. But the recent rise in people just abandoning their pets has made me come to the conclusion that it was time I did my part and help lower the number of strays on the street and dogs in shelters and pounds.
I can only take in so many strays before I’m in over my head. People call me the crazy dog lady simply because I currently have 3 male dogs, and four females; not to mention the 3 hamsters and dozens of fish I also own. :)

Both my dog and I are saddened by the sudden death of the kittens early this morning. The cause of death remains unknown even to the vet. It was been about 2 weeks and a half since they came into our lives and it saddens us both to part with them. Just yesterday my little sisters and I were happy about their eyes opening.
And today we have laid them to rest in peace. It pains me to see my dog searching the house for her dead kittens, and I feel guilty for introducing her to them. She comes to me whining with tears in her eyes clearly distressed over her missing kittens and there’s nothing I can do to ease her worry.
Maybe if the vet could tell me why they died, I’d feel some sort of closure.

Feeding: When in there early stages of pregnancy she will eat the usual amount of food given, but six weeks in she will begin to eat more. You can feed her food that was made for growing puppies or food that is nutritious, but avoid calcium rich foods. I like to mix the foods with canned food. Near the end of her pregnancy or throughout her pregnancy she will pant heavily, so always have a clean source of water for her to drink. I’ve even fed my pregnant dogs cucumbers from time to time.
Urinating and defecating: Just like humans, she will need to use the bathroom more frequently as her pups start to grow. She may have little accidents in the house if you don’t pay attention to the change in her needs.
Activity: Try to keep her from jumping up and down from places like the bed of couch as much as possible. Take her out on short walks and have short play time that isn’t too vigorous.
Whelping box: I would suggest making one if your dog is a first time mom or large dog. I haven’t had problems with my dogs sitting or laying on their pups on accident. They are actually quiet tentative to the location of their pups. Put the Whelping box, or whatever you chose to let her sleep in, somewhere there isn’t too much human activity. Some pregnant dogs will prefer to nest with their human until it is time to deliver and they will want to have privacy.
Bath: Never ever bathe your pregnant dog in flea, tick, or medicated shampoo when she is pregnant. If your dog doesn’t like baths don’t give her one while she is pregnant. Her body is going through changes and she is stressed out enough as it is.
*****NOTE******
If your pregnant dog is kept outdoors please provide her with a warm place to sleep and shaded place to keep out of the heat.Personally I prefer to keep them indoors, because I feel that it is less stressful for pregnant dog(s) to be inside rather than out.
It’s been nearly a week since my dog adopted four abandoned kittens, and she guards them all day and all night. She only leaves them for a few minutes for water and some food. When members of my family other than my youngest sister approach and try to touch the kittens she will snap and snarl. I know for a fact these kittens have found the perfect dog mom.
Shame on the people who thoughtlessly left them in a shoe box when they should be nursing with their birth mom. But thanks to you my old dog has the chance to be a mom again. These kittens will live very happy lives and go to loving homes.
